When she left the show originally, it was because of a contract dispute concerning the amount of money she was getting paid for the show, and the time she was contracted to stay on it. TNG began without her contract being signed-- it was a constant battle that was finally ended when she left the show. She returned with a smaller contract as Sela, and both Denise and Rick Berman agreed to it. This allowed her to stay in Star Trek (even if it was a small part), and still do other rolls in Hollywood.
That's "roles", not "rolls".
