In the TOS/TNG crossover Novel "The Return" by William Shatner; Commander Riker Decided to set the auto destruct sequence (Don't ask me how) believeing that it would be less harmful to the explorers of veridian IV to discover an enormous crater than the remains of the Enterprise-D.

Or, more likely, the U.S.S. Farragut obliterated it from orbit, prior to departing, because why waste engineering time and expertise restoring the power systems on the saucer section, only to self-destruct?
