well it's a subspace vortex, so think of something similar to the tunnelling mechanism used in transwarp. it breaches subspace creating a path to allow faster than light travel over a great distance. there haven't been many forms of propulsion in ST that haven't varied greatly from the "subspace tunneling" or "bubbling" effect generally given.
